Applications for the Veterans Advanced Energy Fellowship are now closed.


The Veterans Advanced Energy Project Fellowship seeks to create a cadre of future leaders within the advanced energy industry.

A successful fellow will become a peer mentor, advocate, and spokesperson for other veterans, reservists, and military spouses, helping to solidify the advanced energy connection to national security and the mission-driven advancement of veterans’ employment in advanced energy.

As fellows rise within advanced energy organizations, they can more closely tie national security to energy security, as well as move the advanced energy economy forward. The program will provide a select group of high-performing, high-potential leaders with:

  • Policy training in energy diplomacy, markets, technology, and experience-based skills training such as public speaking, op-ed writing, and entrepreneurship

  • Mentorship from senior national security and energy leaders in the Atlantic Council’s network

  • Participation in high-profile settings, including Atlantic Council events, publications, and placement of written work

  • Exposure to cutting-edge, fast-growing companies seeking candidates that couple leadership and management skills with technical acumen

Selection Criteria

  • Veteran, Reservist, or Military Spouse Candidates must be a veteran of the US Armed Forces, currently serving in the reserves, or a veteran/military spouse

  • Demonstrated Interest in Advanced Energy Candidates should have a strong demonstrated professional or personal interest in the advanced energy industry, technology, and/or policy

  • Passionate and Driven Candidates are highly accomplished in their careers and expected to rise to the top of their fields in the next 10 years

  • Unique Experiences and Perspectives The Veterans Advanced Energy Fellowship aims to select a cohort that is diverse in personal and professional backgrounds, as well as in the ideological and intellectual perspectives that they bring to the program

  • Engaged in the Community Candidates are active in their communities and committed to working on solutions that will positively impact the veteran community in their region. Fellows are expected to continue their engagement with the Veterans Advanced Energy Network after the completion of the fellowship

  • Able to Participate in Key Dates Candidates are expected to attend an orientation/welcome webinar in September, 2023, monthly policy webinars on the third Tuesday of every month from October 2023 through July 2024, and the 2024 Veterans Advanced Energy Summit tentatively scheduled August 2024 in Washington D.C. (airfare and hotel provided)

  • Prepared to Participate Candidates are expected to (1) Prepare a policy proposal with support from an adviser from the Atlantic Council staff or expert network for publication in the Atlantic Council Energy Source blog (2) Organize one advanced energy event for their local veteran community with support from Atlantic Council staff and network

Program Cost Share

  • There is a participation fee of $5,000 for corporate/private sector participants and a non-profit/public sector rate of $1,500. Be sure to check with your employer regarding professional development funding as this may cover the cost for incoming Fellows. A reduced participation fee is available to those qualified individuals who demonstrate a clear financial need and inability to cost share based on the established model.

  • Cost sharing in this way enables participation and access to the Atlantic Council network and expertise, program management for planning and execution of fellowship activities, airfare and hotel costs for on-stage participation at the 2023 Veterans Advanced Energy Summit, seed funding for the Fellows' regional events, and promotion of sponsoring organizations in the Fellows' activities.

Application and Selection Process

Initial Application, June 15 - July 31, 2023

  • All candidates must complete and submit the candidate information form, essays, and one letter of recommendation to be considered. All materials must be submitted by the deadline

  • Letters of recommendation should be completed by those who can speak to the candidate’s qualifications for the program

  • Applications will be scored by a selection committee composed of Atlantic Council leadership members, staff, fellowship alumni, and Advisory Committee members of the Veterans Advanced Energy Project

Interviews, August 01 - August 15, 2023

  • Candidates selected from the initial round of applications will receive an invitation to interview. Each candidate will be interviewed for 30 minutes via video webinar by a sub-group of the selection committee

  • Additional information about participation fees and scholarship will be available to candidates at this time. Each interviewee will be asked to submit information on their financial and time commitments

Selection, Week of September 21, 2023

  • If selected, each fellow is required to submit a statement agreeing to meet the expectations of the program including: Full participation at meetings and events; development of policy proposal; organization of a local advanced energy event for the veteran community; and ongoing engagement in the Veterans Advanced Energy Network after the program

  • All candidates will be notified on the status of their application the by September 25, 2023
